Five of Swords
The fight is over and the swords are yours, but the people you fought are walking away. You proved your point, and it cost you a relationship that mattered more. Ask yourself whether winning was worth that.

What Five of Swords means
Old battles went to whoever held the field at the end, and this figure holds it. In an argument, holding the field means getting the last word. A win like this is called Pyrrhic, after Pyrrhus, a king who beat Rome twice at such cost that he said one more victory would finish him.
Draw this card mid-argument and you can stop short of winning it, by letting the point go or by making it once and leaving the other person room to disagree. Either way, they're still there when it ends.
When you'd see this
Your partner barely speaks to you for three days after you win the argument.
At work you prove you were right, and now your colleagues route their projects around you.
The reorganization goes through the way you pushed for, but half the team quits.
What's in the picture
-
1
The figure in front holding three swordsA figure in front holds three swords, with a smug, satisfied expression. That's the winner. But the smile isn't joy. It's the hollow win of a point made.
-
2
Two distant figures walking awayBehind the winner, two figures walk away with heads bowed. They've left their swords on the ground. The fight is over, and the winner stands alone.
-
3
Two swords abandoned on the groundTwo swords lie discarded at the winner's feet. The losers didn't take them when they left. That's the cost. What was fought over isn't worth picking back up.

4
Jagged clouds and choppy waterThe sky is full of torn, jagged clouds; the water is choppy and gray. Not the rain of the 3. The unsettled weather after a fight, when the air feels wrong.
Reversed
Four ways to read this card reversed. Which one depends on the question.
Blocked. You won it last month but nobody has said so.
Internal. Replaying the win in your head, where it still feels clean.
Excess. Collecting swords from people who already stopped fighting.
Shadow. You wanted the win more than you wanted any of them.
Where it sits in the suit
The Suit of Swords, ace to king
Ten numbered beats, then four people who carry them.
Swords follows the Three's heartbreak with two responses in a row. The Four lies down to recover, while the Five goes looking for a fight it can win. Winning it leaves the heartbreak where it was.
