Seven of Swords

You've found a clever way around the problem. You slip off with five swords and a half-smile, checking over your shoulder. From the inside, you often can't tell a smart move from an evasion.

What Seven of Swords means

Sometimes you're the camp in this picture. When the card describes someone else, they may be walking off with something of yours while your back is turned, like a coworker presenting your idea at a meeting you weren't invited to.

Carrying the swords by their blades, the figure risks cutting their own hands. A scheme can do that to the person running it: each half-truth is one more story you have to keep straight.

When you'd see this

Skipping a review step saves you a day, and you tell yourself the team wouldn't mind.

That white lie got you out of an awkward conversation so smoothly that you're a little proud of it.

You route the purchase around the expense policy, but weeks later your reasoning looks thinner than it did.

What's in the picture

  1. 1

A figure carrying away five swordsA figure tiptoes away from a camp, carrying five swords. Two stay stuck in the ground. Taking what they want, leaving what they don't, hoping no one notices.

  2. 2

The backwards glanceThey look back over their shoulder with a sly, half-smiling expression. They think they're getting away with it. The clever workaround that bends the rules.

  3. 3

The camp in the backgroundBehind the figure, a military camp. Far off, a few figures stand by a fire, unaware. Are you stealing from your enemy, or from your own people without knowing?

  4. 4

Two swords left stuck in the groundTwo swords remain behind: too many to carry. There's always something the strategy misses, and you don't know what until you check the count later.

Reversed

Four ways to read this card reversed. Which one depends on the question.

Blocked. The plan is good but you haven't carried a single sword.

Internal. The whole scheme is beautiful but has never been run.

Excess. You worked every angle and lost the simple route.

Shadow. Clever with everyone, and nobody has the full account.

Ten numbered beats, then four people who carry them.

The Five of Swords also shows a figure collecting swords, in plain sight after a fight, as the losers leave. This figure skips the fight and is gone before one can start.
