Nine of Swords
At 3 AM you sit up in bed, head in your hands, and run through the same worry again. The house is silent, so it grows by the minute. That doesn't make what you fear more likely.

What Nine of Swords means
Night worry tends to convince you that your trouble is stranger or worse than other people's. The figure grieves that way, as if no sorrow had ever matched theirs. A new parent up with the baby in the small hours can be sure the parents at daycare have it figured out, until one of them admits to the same night.
Grief keeps the same hours as worry. After a death, or a failure you can't undo, the worst has already happened, so company helps more than reassurance.
When you'd see this
You're still turning over a decision from March, hours after you meant to fall asleep.
The night before the interview, you lie awake rehearsing how it could go wrong.
A worry you shrugged off at lunch feels enormous by midnight.
What's in the picture
-
1
A figure sitting up in bed, head in handsA figure sits up in bed in the dark, face buried in their hands. The universal posture of the worried mind at night. The body wants sleep. The mind refuses.
-
2
Nine swords on the wall aboveNine swords hang on the wall behind. Hanging, not falling, not stabbing. These are the thoughts, the catastrophes on loop. Threats? Just the mind at 3am.
-
3
A carved scene of conflict on the bedThe side of the bed shows a carved scene of two figures in conflict. The thing the mind is replaying: the argument, the worry, the regret.
-
4
A patterned quilt of zodiacs and flowersThe quilt is colorful: flowers, zodiac signs, soft patterns. Even in the worst night, the rest of the world is right there. Morning is coming.
Reversed
Four ways to read this card reversed. Which one depends on the question.
Blocked. Awake with it, and you can't put a name to it.
Internal. Nobody in the house knows you've been sitting up.
Excess. Running it so many times that the night has nothing new left.
Shadow. The worry has become the way you prepare for everything.
Where it sits in the suit
The Suit of Swords, ace to king
Ten numbered beats, then four people who carry them.
At the Eight the figure believes there's no way out, and by the Nine they've taken that belief home to bed. Out in the open they could have walked off, but you can't walk out of a night, only sit through it.
Reading a card is a skill, not a lookup
