Ten of Swords

This is as low as it gets, and there's a strange relief in that. The tenth sword has landed, so you can stop bracing for another. The sky starts getting light before you're back on your feet.

What Ten of Swords means

Ten blades went in from behind, out of the figure's sight. When this card means betrayal, it comes while you still think things are fine, like a goodbye note on the kitchen table.

Even face down, the figure holds one hand in the Hierophant's sign of blessing. Once an ending is final, you can give it the same blessing and wish the people in it well.

When you'd see this

After a year of close calls, the company folds, but the next morning you wake up lighter.

Once the verdict is in, you stop replaying the case in your head.

Deleting a number you should have deleted years ago, you feel sad and calmer at the same time.

What's in the picture

  1. 1

Face down, ten swords in the backA figure lies face down with ten swords in their back, the most dramatic image in the deck. But look at the number: ten. The whole suit. It's already over.

  2. 2

The dawn breaking on the horizonLook at the sky: the night is ending. Golden light is breaking on the horizon. The most important detail here. The worst night and the first light, at once.

  3. 3

Calm water beneath the dawnThe water is still and reflective. No storms now. No more wind. The fight is over because there's nothing left to fight. The strange quiet after the worst.

  4. 4

The dramatic, almost theatrical imageThe image is so over-the-top dramatic that it has to be read as symbolic. The mind dramatizes its endings. A chapter ending feels like a life ending. It isn't.

Reversed

Four ways to read this card reversed. Which one depends on the question.

Blocked. The worst has happened, but the sun hasn't come up yet.

Internal. It ended a while ago but the swords are still in.

Excess. Still face down, and the swords came out hours ago.

Shadow. The ending makes a better story than whatever comes next.

Ten numbered beats, then four people who carry them.

The Page of Swords comes next, holding a sword up on a windy rise and looking around. After an ending like this, you start again by watching, curious about what's coming and quicker to check behind you.
