Five of Pentacles

Money has run short and you feel shut out, trudging through the snow. You pass right by a lit window. In survival mode you stop looking for a way in, even when help is close.

What Five of Pentacles means

Trouble on this card comes stacked, injury on top of poverty with the weather on top of both. One problem tends to bring on the next: when the car breaks down you miss shifts, and missed shifts make the rent late.

A bell hangs at the neck of the figure on crutches, the kind people with leprosy once had to wear as a warning. Other people's distance is part of the cold on this card.

When you'd see this

Laid off in March, you'd rather skip meals than ask a friend for a loan.

Medical bills keep coming, and you don't know about the assistance program that would cover most of them.

New in town and feeling like an outsider, you sit out the neighborhood meetup again.

What's in the picture

  1. 1

Two figures trudging through the snowTwo figures walk through falling snow, one on crutches, one in a thin shawl. Tired, cold, still walking. Pentacles hardship is rarely one loud moment.

  2. 2

A stained-glass window above themAbove them, a stained-glass window glows from inside, five pentacles in the glass. Safety is right there. They can see it. They're not inside it.

  3. 3

The two figures walking togetherThey walk together. Not a solo figure. Sometimes literal companions, sometimes just a feeling. Hardship shared is still hardship. It's also still shared.

  4. 4

The heavy snow fallingSnow falls heavily over the scene. The weather itself is the difficulty. The card shows the conditions, not the cause. No blame. It names the cold.

Reversed

Four ways to read this card reversed. Which one depends on the question.

Blocked. The lit window is right there but you walk past it.

Internal. Warm enough on the outside, but the cold is all inside.

Excess. Long enough in the snow that the lit window is scenery.

Shadow. Being cold is easier than asking to come in.

Ten numbered beats, then four people who carry them.

Only this card in Pentacles has snow on the ground. In a suit about what you build over years, that makes the cold a season. Four cards on, the Nine stands at ease in a garden heavy with grapes, a hooded falcon on one glove.

Reading a card is a skill, not a lookup

Every Pentacles card here is taught in full in Chapter V of Little Grimoire, with drills that make the meanings stick.
