Four of Pentacles
You hold on to what you have as if losing one piece would undo you. It looks like security from the outside, but most of it is fear. Gripping this hard also keeps you stuck where you are.

What Four of Pentacles means
For a question about money or property, this card can be plain good news: what you have is safe, and it will stay yours. Some holding on is ordinary sense, since money put aside is supposed to stay put until you need it. Holding on goes wrong when keeping the money is the only thing you do with it.
A parent's house can sit empty for years because selling it would feel like losing them a second time. Gifts and inheritances come under this card too, and they can be the hardest things to let go of.
When you'd see this
You've saved six weeks of vacation, and you keep it banked just in case.
Years after the job stopped fitting, you're still there for the steady paycheck.
A friend could use help you can easily afford, and you hold back anyway.
What's in the picture
-
1
A pentacle clutched to the chestA seated figure wears a crown and clutches a pentacle to their chest with both arms. They aren't holding it. They're gripping it, as if someone might take it.
-
2
A pentacle balanced on the crownA pentacle sits on top of their head, balanced on the crown. Their thoughts are about it. Their identity is stacked on it. Wealth has become who they are.
-
3
Two pentacles pinned under their feetTwo pentacles sit underfoot, not held but held down. The figure plants both feet on them to keep them from going anywhere. Nothing gets in. Nothing gets out.
-
4
A city in the distance behind the figureBehind them: a city, a whole world of other people and possibilities. They sit with their back to it. The cost of the grip: the world is right there.
Reversed
Four ways to read this card reversed. Which one depends on the question.
Blocked. You plan to loosen the grip, and the plan is years old.
Internal. You count it over at night but the total never changes.
Excess. Four pentacles held, and you're reaching for a fifth.
Shadow. What you're holding has started holding you in place.
Where it sits in the suit
The Suit of Pentacles, ace to king
Ten numbered beats, then four people who carry them.
The next card shows what the Four is afraid of: two people in rags passing a lit window in the snow, one of them on crutches. They're walking through it together. At the Six, coins start changing hands again, from a merchant to someone kneeling.
