What King of Pentacles means

This king's intelligence is practical, sometimes with a gift for numbers, and they tend to build what they plan. Show them an empty lot and they'll tell you what a house there will cost, to the nearest thousand.

A plated foot at the hem shows armor under this king's robe, as under the Emperor's, and both thrones are carved with horned heads, bulls on this one and rams on the Emperor's. Both cards mean protecting what you've made.

When you'd see this

She could buy a bigger house but puts the money into raises for her staff.

Three of his former apprentices now run carpentry shops of their own.

Her will, accounts and passwords are in order, so her kids can settle the estate in a week.

What's in the picture

  1. 1

The King's throne amid growthThe King sits at ease on a throne, robes heavy with embroidered grapes and vines. Settled, not performative. They're not projecting power. They have it.

  2. 2

Pentacle and scepter, one in each handA pentacle held casually in one hand, a scepter in the other. Neither is displayed. Wealth and authority, held as a matter of fact. Evidence, not the point.

  3. 3

A castle visible in the backgroundBehind them: a castle they built, or one that is theirs. It's there because someone did the work to put it there. The person whose systems outlast them.

  4. 4

Vines, grapes, and roses at the throneThe throne is surrounded by grape vines and abundant growth. Their wealth flowers. They aren't hoarding; what they have is alive. Stewardship, not accumulation.

Reversed

Four ways to read this card reversed. Which one depends on the question.

Blocked. The plans are good but the field is still a field.

Internal. Everything built, but not a word of it said out loud.

Excess. Another wing on a house that was finished years ago.

Shadow. Measuring people the way they'd measure a piece of land.

Ten numbered beats, then four people who carry them.

Money sits on the Four of Pentacles' head, a coin perched above the crown, as if the figure couldn't think past it. The King's crown is wreathed with red flowers: with enough put by, there's room for pleasure.
