What Knight of Pentacles means

A nurse who takes the same readings each shift is the first to see a patient's numbers start to drift. The Knight of Pentacles finds out what has changed by checking the same things at a set hour.

As a partner, they take few chances: they court slowly and, once committed, stay. It'll be a quiet romance, and for plenty of people that's the appeal.

When you'd see this

Her credit card balance hits zero after four years of small monthly payments.

On his farm, he replaces a few fence posts each Sunday until the fence is new end to end.

Weekend by weekend, a couple restores an old wooden boat, and three years later it floats.

What's in the picture

  1. 1

The motionless knight on a black horseA knight sits completely still on a black horse, also standing still. Wands charges. Swords gallops. Cups drifts. This knight is not moving at all.

  2. 2

A pentacle held carefully out in frontThey hold one pentacle out in front, balanced on one hand, gaze fixed ahead. They're thinking. Not whether to do it. How to do it right.

  3. 3

A plowed field behind the horseBehind them: a freshly plowed field stretching to the horizon. The work is real, and it's already done. When this knight finishes something, it's done right.

  4. 4

An armored posture, calm and uprightHeavy armor, upright posture, and nothing about them is performing. They're here to get it done. Doesn't quit and doesn't cut corners. Unflashy. Unstoppable.

Reversed

Four ways to read this card reversed. Which one depends on the question.

Blocked. The furrow is straight but the horse hasn't taken a step.

Internal. Reliable to everyone, and the asking only goes one way.

Excess. Thorough enough that the field takes a season too long.

Shadow. Slow enough that nobody can blame them for anything.

Ten numbered beats, then four people who carry them.

The worker at the Eight of Pentacles spends their hours on skills still out of reach. The Knight spends theirs on work they can already do, and a skill moves from the first kind of hour to the second after they learn it.

Reading a card is a skill, not a lookup

Every Pentacles card here is taught in full in Chapter V of Little Grimoire, with drills that make the meanings stick.
