Seven of Pentacles
Mid-season, you lean on your hoe and look honestly at what you've grown. The vine is heavy with coins, but the harvest isn't finished. You're deciding whether to give this vine another season or start over somewhere new.

What Seven of Pentacles means
Four years into a novel, you can't read your own draft as a stranger would. The farmer has the same trouble with this vine: the pentacles on it are treasure, and the farmer's heart is in them.
Some crops take years to bear, so needing more time is a fair reason to stay with this one. The seasons you've already put in aren't, since they're spent either way.
When you'd see this
Halfway through the year, you take stock of your career and ask if it's going where you'd hoped.
The side business brings in a few hundred a month, and you set that against the weekends it takes.
Coaching the youth team has taken five seasons of Saturdays, so this spring you ask what it's given back.
What's in the picture
-
1
A farmer leaning on a hoeA farmer leans on a hoe, resting. They've been working. They're not done, but they're pausing, thoughtful, not satisfied, to look at what their work has produced.
-
2
Six pentacles on the vineSix pentacles are growing on the vine in front of them, a real, tangible harvest. The work is there, you can see it growing. The question is what happens next.
-
3
The seventh pentacle on the groundThe seventh pentacle lies on the ground at their feet: fallen off the vine, or set aside. What's gone into the ground, and what's still growing?
-
4
A thoughtful, measured expressionThe farmer's face is neither happy nor frustrated. It's considering. The mid-project reckoning: is this paying off? Keep tending this vine, or plant something else?
Reversed
Four ways to read this card reversed. Which one depends on the question.
Blocked. Leaning on the hoe, and counting the crop instead of picking it.
Internal. You've done the sums but the hoe has not moved.
Excess. Checking the crop so often you've stopped letting it grow.
Shadow. You'd rather weigh it than find out you were wrong.
Where it sits in the suit
The Suit of Pentacles, ace to king
Ten numbered beats, then four people who carry them.
In each of the four Sevens a figure has their eyes on something, but only here is it their own work. The Cups figure stares at visions, and the Swords figure looks back at a camp they're robbing.
Reading a card is a skill, not a lookup
Every Pentacles card here is taught in full in Chapter V of Little Grimoire, with drills that make the meanings stick.
