Three of Pentacles

You're past being a beginner, and it shows in the work. Other people bring the plans and the purpose, and you bring the skill to make them real. It takes all three of you to get the building up.

What Three of Pentacles means

This card can mean your trade itself, the work you're trained for and known by. Its meanings include renown as well as skilled labor. Renown in this sense starts small: the people who rely on your part of the job begin recommending you to others.

The mason has turned mid-job to talk with the other two. After the Two's solo juggling, this is the first card in Pentacles where the work needs other people. You learn by working beside people who know things you don't, and by being useful to them while you do.

When you'd see this

Six months on a real team teaches you more than three years of working solo did.

For the first time, a senior colleague takes your idea seriously and builds on it.

In the family business, your parents start asking for your ideas.

What's in the picture

  1. 1

The stonemason on the benchA stonemason stands on a raised bench, working a monastery archway. Elevated not by status, but because their hands are where the work is happening.

  2. 2

Consulting the stonemasonOne holds architectural plans, the other looks like a patron or monk. Three people, three roles: vision, resources, skill. None could build alone.

  3. 3

Three pentacles in the archwayAbove them, three pentacles are set into the stonework itself: the early craft becoming part of the building. What's being made will outlast all three of them.

  4. 4

The monastery settingThis is a monastery, a sacred building made to last, so they're putting their skill into work that matters.

Reversed

Four ways to read this card reversed. Which one depends on the question.

Blocked. Three of you and one set of plans, but nobody has cut stone.

Internal. Your part is done well, and the asking never happens.

Excess. Every decision goes to all three, and none of them survive it.

Shadow. Skilled work that only counts when the others are watching.

Ten numbered beats, then four people who carry them.

The Eight of Pentacles is the suit's other craft card, and there one person practices alone while the finished coins hang on a post beside them. Together the two cards cover the hours you put in on your own and the work you can only do with other people.

Reading a card is a skill, not a lookup

Every Pentacles card here is taught in full in Chapter V of Little Grimoire, with drills that make the meanings stick.
