Four of Cups
You're comfortable, and you've gone numb to it. You sit in the shade, arms crossed, while a hand from a cloud offers you a new cup. You haven't noticed it, or you'd rather not.

What Four of Cups means
The cup from the cloud is the same plain gold cup as the three in the grass. If you've had your fill, a new chance can look like more of the same. The numbness on this card comes from plenty, much as a favorite album played every day for a year turns into background noise.
At a glance the figure looks content, someone who has enough and knows it. Up close, the eyes are lowered and the mouth turns down: the look of someone discontented with where they are. That kind of discontent feeds on small complaints, and most of them wouldn't hold up if you said them out loud.
When you'd see this
When your partner suggests a weekend away, you can't make yourself care either way.
Friends keep asking you out, and you keep finding reasons to stay home.
On paper your life is fine, but you go through it on autopilot.
What's in the picture
-
1
The seated figure with crossed armsA person sits under a tree, arms crossed, looking down or away. Not engaged with the world. Emotional withdrawal: turned inward, closed off, maybe bored.
-
2
Three cups on the ground in frontThree cups sit before them, the joy of the first three cards. They're looking right at them, but what they already have isn't registering anymore.
-
3
A fourth cup offered from a cloudLike the Aces, a hand from a cloud offers a new cup, a new emotional opportunity. But the figure doesn't notice it. The gift is there. They're not open to it.
-
4
The tree providing shadeThe figure sits under a tree: comfortable, shaded, protected. Not in danger, not suffering. It's apathy. The stability of the 4 has become stagnation.
Reversed
Four ways to read this card reversed. Which one depends on the question.
Blocked. You want the tree and the quiet but nobody will give you either.
Internal. Sitting under the tree in your head while you smile through the party.
Excess. Withdrawn long enough that nobody offers the fourth cup.
Shadow. Calling it reflection when it's refusing.
Where it sits in the suit
The Suit of Cups, ace to king
Ten numbered beats, then four people who carry them.
One other card in Cups shows someone tired of cups that are still good. At the Eight, in a red cloak and with a staff, they walk off under the moon and leave eight cups stacked upright behind them. The figure here stays seated.
Reading a card is a skill, not a lookup
Every Cups card here is taught in full in Chapter III of Little Grimoire, with drills that make the meanings stick.
