What King of Cups means

After you lose your first case, a senior partner takes you to lunch and tells you about losing theirs. That partner is a King of Cups: someone with standing who's glad to lend you some of it.

The warning version is someone with power over you who pretends to help but wishes you ill. Judge their help by its results.

When you'd see this

While the crowd shouts, the crisis negotiator keeps her voice low and steady.

At a tense meeting with angry parents, the principal calms them by listening first and speaking softly.

His daughter cries for an hour, and he stays beside her.

What's in the picture

  1. 1

The stone throne in open waterThe King sits on a stone throne in turbulent water. Waves roll, but the King stays perfectly still. They don't avoid emotion. They sit in the middle of it.

  2. 2

Cup in one hand, scepter in the otherThey hold a cup (emotion) and a scepter (authority), one in each hand. Feeling deeply while keeping composure. They don't suppress emotion. They steer it.

  3. 3

A ship riding the turbulent seaOn one side a ship rides the rough waves; on the other a dolphin leaps. The world around the King is chaotic. They remain the calm center.

  4. 4

The fish pendant around the neckA small fish hangs on a chain at the King's neck: the fish from the Page's cup, now worn as a symbol, not a shock. They've integrated the unconscious.

Reversed

Four ways to read this card reversed. Which one depends on the question.

Blocked. Calm in the stern, and the rest of the boat is not.

Internal. Steady on the surface, and every wave is happening underneath.

Excess. Calm enough that nothing seems to matter, including what does.

Shadow. A calm that keeps everyone at arm's length and calls it patience.

Ten numbered beats, then four people who carry them.

Where the Queen of Cups keeps their feelings in a closed cup and watches it, the King leaves an open cup alone and watches the sea. The feelings that need tending now are other people's.
