Two of Cups

Two people meet as equals, each holding out a cup to the other. Neither one is taking more than they give. Opening up is a risk, but both of them choose to take it.

What Two of Cups means

Between the two cups, one figure has stretched a free hand toward the other's. Even a bond you both want starts with someone moving first. That's as true of a friendship as of a passion, and the card's meanings take in both.

The Lovers is laid out the same way, with two people below and something winged above them. There the two stand naked in a garden under an angel, and the card marks a choice that sets the course of a life. Here they're clothed, with a house on the hill behind them, and the choice is the everyday kind: a bond you make with someone and keep making.

When you'd see this

On a first date, you both lean in at the same moment and it clicks.

College friends meet after ten years apart and pick up mid-sentence.

Shaking hands with a new cofounder, each of you knows this will work.

What's in the picture

  1. 1

Two figures facing each otherTwo people stand face to face, each holding a cup, exchanging pledges. A meeting of equals. Neither is above the other. Mutual, freely given.

  2. 2

The cups extended toward each otherBoth cups are held forward: an exchange, not a taking. Each person offers what they have. The emotional choice here is to open up, to say yes to connection.

  3. 3

The winged lion and caduceusAbove them, a winged lion's head sits atop two intertwined snakes (a caduceus): healing, balance, and sacred union. The bond isn't casual. It has weight.

  4. 4

The simple, intimate settingNo crowd, no castle, no grand landscape. Just two people in a quiet moment. The setting is intimate and private. This connection doesn't need an audience.

Reversed

Four ways to read this card reversed. Which one depends on the question.

Blocked. Two cups raised, and neither of you has said it first.

Internal. You feel the bond but the other person doesn't know it.

Excess. Bound up in each other until nobody else gets in.

Shadow. Neither of you wants this. Neither of you wants to be alone.

Ten numbered beats, then four people who carry them.

The Two of Wands stands alone on a castle wall, choosing a direction. In Cups the choice at this rank is a person. What it starts runs on through the suit: it turns into memory at the Six and into contentment at the Nine.
