What Nine of Cups means

Those nine cups hold more wine than one person could drink in a night. There's plenty for tomorrow, so the figure can enjoy tonight without rationing. On a long holiday, that's the week you stop counting the days left.

The card's nickname is the wish card. Fortune-tellers who used ordinary playing cards had their own, the nine of hearts, from the suit that matches Cups. You wished while you cut the pack, and if that nine turned up beside the card standing for you, you'd get your wish.

When you'd see this

Out on the porch at sunset, you feel grateful for how your life turned out.

Therapy took years, and these days you're at ease in your own skin.

Making partner at the firm feels as sweet as you'd imagined.

What's in the picture

  1. 1

The satisfied seated figureA well-dressed person sits with arms folded and a look of deep satisfaction. The 4's crossed arms said apathy. These say: I got what I wanted. Contentment.

  2. 2

Nine cups arranged on a high shelfBehind the figure, nine cups sit in an arc on a draped shelf, displayed like trophies. Emotional wishes fulfilled, each one earned and placed with pride.

  3. 3

The comfortable, prosperous settingThe figure is well-dressed, well-fed, sitting on a comfortable bench. No struggle here. The emotional journey has reached real abundance and ease.

  4. 4

The solitary enjoymentUnlike the 3's communal dancing, this is private satisfaction. The figure sits alone, savoring what they have. No audience needed. It's internal and complete.

Reversed

Four ways to read this card reversed. Which one depends on the question.

Blocked. The nine cups are on the shelf but you still haven't made the wish.

Internal. Content, and never letting it show, in case someone takes it.

Excess. Satisfied enough that nothing new can get a look in.

Shadow. So pleased with the shelf that the host never invites anyone.

Ten numbered beats, then four people who carry them.

The happiness widens at the Ten, from one person to a family. That takes more than a wish: the other people in the house have to be happy along with you.
