Knight of Cups

Their quest is love, the courtly kind. At a walk, they ride up holding out a cup, the way a suitor offers flowers. They plan each gesture ahead of time and mean it.

What Knight of Cups means

On the receiving end, the Knight of Cups is someone working up to an invitation. A coworker stops by your desk most days for a month before asking whether you'd like to get coffee sometime.

This knight dreams in pictures, and what they chase can be a piece of art: a song or a painting made out of a feeling.

When you'd see this

He plans their anniversary dinner down to the playlist.

When a friend has a hard week, she drives through a snowstorm to bring soup.

With a poem she wrote herself, she proposes and reads it with shaking hands.

What's in the picture

  1. 1

The horse walking, not gallopingUnlike the Wands Knight's rearing charge, this horse walks calmly forward. The pursuit is measured, romantic, intentional. The Knight doesn't rush. They arrive.

  2. 2

The cup held forward like an offeringThe Knight extends the cup outward: not a weapon, not a trophy, an offering. They're bringing something to someone. A proposal, a gift, a gesture.

  3. 3

The winged helmetThe Knight wears a winged helmet, wings for imagination, inspiration, and messages. The romantic messenger, carrying feeling from one place to another.

  4. 4

The calm river and gentle landscapeA quiet river winds through a peaceful landscape. No desert, no fire, no chaos. The pursuit happens in gentle, flowing surroundings. Water is at home here.

Reversed

Four ways to read this card reversed. Which one depends on the question.

Blocked. The cup is held out and the horse won't cross the stream.

Internal. Deep in it, but the other person hasn't heard a word.

Excess. A grand gesture every week, and nothing ordinary in between.

Shadow. In love with the offering, and bored by anyone who accepts it.

Ten numbered beats, then four people who carry them.

A feeling offered at the Ace can end, years on, in the Ten's household under the rainbow. The Knight rides the stretch in between, when the feeling has somewhere to go and no answer yet.
