Queen of Cups
This queen feels other people's emotions as deeply as their own. Like the closed cup in their hands, they keep what they feel contained. Their throne sits by the sea, and they're at home with deep emotion.

What Queen of Cups means
The Queen of Cups doesn't take a friend's sorrow home. They'll listen to your divorce story until midnight and then sleep soundly. The listening doesn't drain them, so on Friday they're glad to hear what happened next.
Their intuition comes from love. Caring about someone means watching them closely, so a hunch about them usually rests on small changes you've noticed without naming. The card's advice is to trust it.
When you'd see this
The hospice nurse on the night shift holds a patient's hand and knows what to say.
Before her client says a word, the therapist can tell something is wrong.
He turns his grief into songs that make strangers cry at his shows.
What's in the picture
-
1
The ornate, closed cupUnlike every other Cups court card, the Queen's cup is closed, covered in decoration. Their emotions run so deep they're contained, not displayed.
-
2
The Queen's gaze on the cupThey look at the cup with quiet focus. The Page meets a cup with wonder and the Knight offers one; the Queen is contemplating its depths. They've been there.
-
3
The throne at the water's edgeThe throne sits at the water's edge, the Queen's feet almost touching the waves. Not in the water: at the boundary between conscious and unconscious, at home.
-
4
Cherubs and sea shells on the throneThe throne carries cherubs (love), sea shells (the ocean), and fish (the unconscious). The Queen is made of water. Emotion is who they are.
Reversed
Four ways to read this card reversed. Which one depends on the question.
Blocked. The care is ready but nobody wants it today.
Internal. Holding everyone else's feelings, and none of them their own.
Excess. So attuned to everyone that there's no Queen left in the chair.
Shadow. Care that needs the other person to stay broken.
Where it sits in the suit
The Suit of Cups, ace to king
Ten numbered beats, then four people who carry them.
Wishful thinking fills the Seven of Cups, where the visions go untested. Like the Seven, this queen sees visions, but acts on them, and what they do feeds what they see next.
Reading a card is a skill, not a lookup
